San Blas was founded in 1768 by Spain as
a home port for the first Spanish armada on the West coast.
In
its harbor, Spanish galleons loaded with gold from the Philippines
were provided protection from Dutch and English pirates. Sent from
San Blas in 1769, Friar Juan Junipero Serra started the first missions
in Northern Mexico, Baja and California.
The port of San Blas is 95 miles north of Puerto Vallarta. For decades
travelers have visited its beaches for sun, surf, and relaxation.
This fishing village has preserved its small-town friendly atmosphere
with its festivals and historic sites.
